Surgery was 7 hours. Dr. Ross is pretty confident that he resected the entire tumor (will verify in one month with MRI). The tumor was thought to be next to her motor strip but ended up actually being in it which made the surgery much more risky for deficits. We are blessed Dr. Ross decided to do an awake craniotomy. This helped reassure where her motor skills were and to try to do as less damage as possible. At risk were her left leg, arm, hand, and left side of her face. Fortunately for Dr. Ross being the amazing surgeon he is she has only temporarily lost some motor function to her arm and hand. Her leg and face are ok. With physical therapy and time she should be able to get most function back. She is left handed so this has been extremely difficult, but she is so strong and will continue to work to regain her strength. The road will be full of ups and downs but we are so grateful there is no more tumor or anything permanent. Thank you all again so much for your support. You are all amazing. Army Sgt. Patrick Hawkins, 25, of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, was killed on Oct. 6, 2013, while conducting a special operations mission in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. Hawkins was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment of Fort Benning, Georgia. Hawkins’ friends and fellow service members remember his enthusiasm for CrossFit. He often used CrossFit training with his Fire Team and particularly enjoyed wearing weighted body armor during his workouts. Hawkins is survived by his wife, Brittanie; and parents, Roy and Sheila.
